In order to stem rapid species extinction, loss of natural habitat, and decreased opportunities to connect with nature, a deliberate focus on protecting and restoring our natural environment is needed. Technological advances and increased efficiency will not suffice alone. Goals of sustainability and no net loss are paramount, but also are not enough. At this point in time, we must aggressively invest in our natural capital. Investing in natural capital provides immediate economic benefits for communities and landscapes. Yet, like sound financial investing, long-term investments in nature will yield the greatest future value.
